Federal officials had taken Demjanjuk to a federal building in downtown Cleveland, but the 89-year-old retired autoworker's impending return to Germany was halted when three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay of deportation.

John Demjanjuk Jr. was returning to the Cleveland area from Cincinnati, where he had filed motions asking the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for a stay of deportation and to reopen the U.S. case that ordered his father deported. The U.S. government said Tuesday it is asking German officials for travel documents needed to deport accused World War II Nazi guard John Demjanjuk, who is charged in Europe with 29,000 counts of accessory to murder.
